Wiener Aktionismus

Austrian Postwar – 1 C-print from: Wiederaufgeführte Malaktionen 12., 14. und 16., Prinzendorf 1988. On photographic paper. Signed, numbered and with label on the verso, there with typographic work details and the copyright stamp. Spot-mounted to underlying mat and under mat, framed under glass. - Corners barely noticeably bumped. All in all good. Splendid print. - One of 40 copies. - The photograph documents Hermann Nitsch's re-performance of the so-called Malaktionen, which traditionally took place at Prinzendorf Castle, Austria. The Malaktion took place on 24 January 1988 and included the re-enactments of the three previous Painting Actions 12, 14 and 16, which were first performed in 1965 at locations in Vienna. The painting actions were the venue for the so-called "Orgien Mysterien Theater", which Nitsch regarded as a festival for people. In the spirit of Viennese Actionism, he explored the limits of the human body in ways not seen before and made them the subject of his art; the elements here often circulate around blood and slaughter. - The photograph was taken by Rolf Leitenbor as documentation of the 1988 painting action.
