Schon als Jugendliche wurde Blannbek zu den "devotae begines" gezählt, Frauen, deren Lebensinhalt aus Meditation und religiösen Exerzitien bestand, die aber keinem Orden beitraten. - Die Handschrift von Blannbeks Vita und Visionen nach den Aufzeichnungen ihres Beichtvaters war als Abschrift des Neresheimer Codex (14. Jh.) ins Benediktinerstift Melk gelangt, wo sie Stiftsbibliothekar Bernhard Pez mit Approbatio seines Abts Berthold (abgedruckt auf Bl. xx4r) herausgab und damit einen veritablen Skandal provozierte: "Dem Historiker Pez war die Schrift um ihres kulturgeschichtlichen Gehaltes willen bemerkenswert, andere aber nahmen die Publikation zum Ärgernisse, man steckte sich hinter den Präfekten der Hofbibliiothek Pio Niccolò Garelli und dieser vermochte dann Kaiser Karl VI. zur Beschlagnahme der ganzen Auflage zu bewegen." (zit. Lhotsky). Stein des Anstoßes war wohl das Kap. 37, in dem über der Begine Visionen im Zusammspiel mit der Vorhaut Christi berichtet wird. - Das ebenfalls von Pez nach einem Manuskript herausgegebene und hier als zweiter Teil abgedruckte Werk, dem Mönch Boto (Potho) aus dem Kloster Prüfening zugeschrieben, ist ein typisches mittelalterliches Mirakelbuch. - Titelbl. mit Besitzervermerk, Vorsätze und letztes Bl. mit wenigen kleinen Wurmspuren. Insgesamt sehr sauberes Exemplar dieses kuriosen Rarissimums.

Theology and Religious Studies – First edition of one of the rarest and most controversial soureces for German medieval women's mysticism. - For references see above. - Of legendary rarity in the trade, only one copy traceable for us at auctions (1976). - First printing of the visions of the Viennese bigot Agnes Blannbek (1244-1315), condemned by contemporaries as offensive and blasphemous. Already as a teenager, Blannbek was counted among the "devotae begines," women whose lives consisted of meditation and religious exercises, but who did not join any religious orders. - A manuscript of Blannbek's Life and Visions, based on the records of her confessor, had reached the Benedictine Abbey of Melk as a copy of the Neresheim Codex (14th century), where it was published by the abbey's librarian, Bernhard Pez, with the approval of his abbot, Berthold (approbation printed on page xx4r), thereby provoking a veritable scandal: "The historian Pez found the text remarkable for its cultural-historical content, but others took the publication as an offense, they backed the prefect of the court library, Pio Niccolò Garelli, and he was then able to persuade Emperor Charles VI to confiscate the entire edition." (quoted by Lhotsky). The bone of contention was likely chapter. 37, in which Blannbek's visions in connection with the "praeputium Christi", the Lord's foreskin, are reported. - The second work bound in, also published by Pez from a manuscript, is attributed to the monk Boto (Potho) from the Prüfening monastery and is a typical medieval miracle book. - Title page with owner's note, endpapers and last page with a few small worm marks. Overall, a very clean copy of this curious rarity.
