Mit Titel in großer Holzschnitt-Bordüre, rund 160 Textholzschnitten, wovon einige ganz- und viele halbseitig, zahlreichen belebten Initialen und Zierleisten, sowie vielen, teils wiederholten Vignetten, alle im Holzschnitt. "Seine ungewöhnlich schön gedruckte und reich mit wundervollen Zierbuchstaben und -leisten geschmückte Ausgabe bietet 160 völlig selbständig erfundene Abbildungen, meisterhaft gezeichnete Holzschnitte von größtem, künstlerischen Reiz, die zugleich ein vortreffliches Verständnis aller baulichen Vorgänge verraten" (Ebhardt). Außerdem mit einem Abriß über die techn. Möglichkeiten untersch. Baumaterialien und -methoden in Portugal, Spanien, Frankreich, Deutschland und Polen. - Die prächtigen, in unserem Exemplar kräftigen und kontrastreichen Holzschnitte zeigen Säulenordnungen, Darstellungen menschlicher Proportionen, Ornamente, Maschinen, Pflanzendarstellungen etc. - Die Bl. Mm und N auf dünnerem, hellerem Papier (jedoch d. Zt.) gedruckt. Teils wasserrandig, schmutz-, finger- und stockfleckig, die hinteren Vorsätze leimschattig, sonst gut erhaltenes Exemplar des Rarums.
Prints before 1600, Bibles, Classics in Original Languages – First edition of the famous architectural work on Vitruvius's 10 books. - For references see above. - With title in a large woodcut border, around 160 text woodcuts, some of which are full-paged and many half-paged, numerous animated initials and decorative borders, as well as many, partly repeated vignettes, all in woodcut. - A commendable work by the Italian architect, engineer, painter, and theorist Giovanni Antonio Rusconi (1520-1587). "His unusually beautifully printed edition, richly decorated with wonderful ornamental lettering and borders, offers 160 completely independently invented illustrations, masterfully drawn woodcuts of the greatest artistic charm, which simultaneously reveal an excellent understanding of all construction processes" (Ebhardt). Also includes an outline of the technical possibilities of various building materials and methods in Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, and Poland at the time. - The magnificent woodcuts, in our copy bold and rich in contrast, show column arrangements, depictions of human proportions, ornaments, machines, plants etc. - Leaves Mm and N are printed on thinner, lighter laid paper (although contemporary). - Partly water-stained, soiled, finger-stained and foxed. The rear endpapers with glue stains, otherwise, a well-preserved copy of this rare gem.
