Alte Drucke, Bibeln, Klassische Autoren in den Originalsprachen – Dritte italienische Ausgabe von Vitruvius' klassischem Traktak über Architektur. - Fowler 410. - Cicognara 717. - Poleni 93, 4. - Riccardi II, 615. - Choix d'Olschki 5486. - Zweite von Daniel Barbaro erweiterte, korrigierte und kommentierte Ausgabe, durchgehend illustriert u.a. nach Zeichnungen Andrea Palladios mit prächtigen und instruktiven Holzschnitten von Giuseppe Porta Salviat bzw. laut Cigognara und Poleni auch dem deutschen Holzschneider Johann Krieger (Giovanni Chrieger) zugeschrieben. Die Illusrationen zeigen Gebäude, deren Teile, Baumaschinen, Uhren und andere mechanische Vorrichtungen, Werkzeuge u.a. - Das in der ersten von Barbaro edierten Ausgabe von 1556 noch mittels Volvellen mechanisch rekonstruierbare Doppeltheater von Curio hier als doppelblattgroße, mittels Falz eingehängte Tafel. - Provenienz: Derek Gair Gibson (1935-2021), namhafter britischer Kardiologe, mit dessen Ex Libris als Blindstempel auf dem vorderen Vorsatz recto. - Stärkerer Beschnitt des Kopfstegs, teils mit Verlust der Kopfzeile und Paginierung. Titelblatt und die letzten beiden Blätter mit hinterlegten Wurmspuren im Innensteg, einige Blätter mit hinterlegten Randläsuren im Außensteg, mitunter gering schmutz-, stock- und braunfleckig. Insgesamt ein wohlerhaltenes Exemplar des gesuchten Klassikers.

Prints before 1600, Bibles, Classics in Original Languages – 3rd Italian edition of Vitruvius' classic treatise on architecture. - For references see above. - With title wood-cut and over 100 further wood-cuts, of which 9 are double-paged (2 bound in out of the pagination) or extend over two pages, several full-paged and many half-paged, by G. Porta Salivati after A. Palladio and others, as well as numerous large initials, some of which are inhabited or decorated with tendrils. - Second of Daniele Barbaros editions of Vitruvius, expanded, corrected, and annotated, furthermore illustrated throughout after genuine drawings by Barbaro's collaborator Andrea Palladio with magnificent wood-cuts by Giuseppe Porta Salviati among othes, but, according to Cigognara and Poleni, also partly attributed to the German woodcutter Johann Krieger (Giovanni Chrieger). The illustrations show buildings, their parts, construction machinery, clocks and other mechanical devices, tools, etc. - Curio's double theater, which in the first edition edited by Barbaro in 1556 could still be mechanically reconstructed using volvelles, is here presented as a double-paged plate bound in without pagination. - Provenance: Derek Gair Gibson (1935-2021), eminent British cardiologist, with his blind-stamped bookplate on the front fly-leaf recto. - Heavier trimming of the top margin, partly with loss of the header and pagination. The title leave and the last two leaves show backed worm marks in the inner margin, some leaves show backed marginal wear in the outer margin, some with minor soiling, foxing, and brownish stains. Overall, a well-preserved copy of this sought-after classic.
