Wurzbach I, S. 13 (Algarotti). - Nicht bei Graesse und Brunet. - Erste Biographie von Conte Francesco Algarotti (1712-64), illustrer Dichter, Kunstkritiker, Philosoph und Diplomat, nur einige Jahre nach dessen Tod verfasst. Algarotti genoss die Gunst Friedrichs des Großen, der ihn zum Grafen von Preußen ernannte, den Orden "Pour le mérite" verlieh und schließlich auf dem Campo Santo in Pisa ein Denkmal errichten ließ. Das Werk ist demgemäß auch eine dreiseitige Widmung an den preußischen König vorangestellt, die zugehörige, kunstfertig gestochene Kopfvignette zeigt u.a. ein stilisiertes preussisches Wappen. - Als Schriftsteller verfasste Algarotti u.a. "Newtonianismo per le dame" (1737) und "Saggi sopra le belle arti" (1760). Auch war er im Auftrag des sächsischen Königshaus als Kunsthändler tätig. 1772 sollte in Berlin bei Decker eine französische Ausgabe des Werks erscheinen. - Provenienz: Paul Jankowsky, mit dessen um 1850 angebrachten Namenszug auf dem vorderen Vorsatz verso. - Es fehlen das Frontispiz mit gestochenem Porträt Algarottis und der gestochene Titel mit Druckermarke, wie in anderen im Handel und in institutionellen Beständen nachweisbaren Exemplaren. - Die hübschen Buntpapiervorsätze mit Randbräunung, erste und letzte Seiten etwas finger- und schmutzfleckig, Blatt p4 mit kleinen Wasserflecken. Insgesamt trotz der Mängel sammelwürdiges Exemplar mit kräftigen und klaren Kupfern.

History – First edition of the biography of an illustrious protégé of Frederick the Great. With 4 copper engravings in dot manner by Giovanni Volpato, partly after Francesco Magiotto, where of 2 illustrated head-pieces and initials each. - First biography of Conte Francesco Algarotti (1712-64), illustrious poet, art critic, philosopher and diplomat, written only a few years after his death. Algarotti enjoyed the favour of Frederick the Great, who appointed him Count of Prussia, awarded him the order 'Pour le mérite' and finally had a monument erected on the Campo Santo in Pisa. Accordingly, the work is preceded by a three-page dedication to the Prussian king, and the corresponding head-piece shows the Prussian coat of arms. - As a writer, Algarotti's works include 'Newtonianismo per le dame' (1737) and most prominently 'Saggi sopra le belle arti' (1760). He also worked as an art dealer on behalf of the Saxon royal family. A French edition of the work was to be published by Decker in Berlin in 1772. - Provenance: Paul Jankowsky, with his inscription on the verso of the front fly-leaf, added around 1850. - The frontispiece with engraved portrait of Algarotti and the engraved title with printer's mark are missing, as in other copies in the trade and institutional holdings. - The attractive marbled endpapers with marginal browning, first and last pages somewhat finger-stained and soiled, leaf p4 with small water stains. Overall a collectible copy despite the flaws, with contrast-rich and clear engravings.
