Geschichtswissenschaften – Kirchner 1687 und I, 131. Diesch 2068. - Bedeutendstes politisches Journal seiner Zeit mit einer unerschöpflichen Fülle von Informationen über die Vorgänge zur Französ. Revolution und deren Auswirkungen in Deutschland und der napoleonischen Ära. Anfangs liberal wurde die Zeitschrift zunehmend konservativer. - Die monatlich erschienene Zeitschrift wurde von dem Helmstedter Professor Gottlob Benedict von Schirach 1781 gegründet und nach dessen Tod 1804 von seinem Sohn Wilhelm Benedict bis zum Jahr 1840 weitergeführt. - Ursprünglich in liberalem Geiste geführt,"wurde die Zeitschrift während der Französischen Revolution zum Abwehrorgan umstürzlerischer Ideen". Sie wurde von versch. Regierungen unterstützt, und "lebendig geschriebene polit. Berichte, Aufsätze über maritime Nachrichten, Mitteilungen statistischer und handelspolit. Art machten das inhaltlich hochstehende Journal beliebt und verschafften ihm eine weite Verbreitung" (Kirchner). - Stellenw. etwas stockfleckig.

History – The most important political journal of its time, with an inexhaustible wealth of information about the events of the French Revolution and its effects in Germany and the Napoleonic era. Initially liberal, the journal became increasingly conservative. The monthly magazine was founded in 1781 by Professor Gottlob Benedict von Schirach of Helmstedt and, after his death in 1804, was continued by his son Wilhelm Benedict until 1840. Originally run in a liberal spirit, "during the French Revolution, the magazine became a defense against subversive ideas." It was supported by various governments, and "lively political reports, essays on maritime news, and statistical and trade policy communications made the high-quality journal popular and ensured its wide circulation" (Kirchner). - Somewhat foxed in places.
