Historiae. (Hg. von Aenea Volpe.) Venedig, Christophorus de Pensis für Octavianus Scotus, 15. Juli 1499. 72 Bl. 45 Zl. und Titelzl. Rom. Typ. Sign. a-m6. Mit 3 neun, 1 sechs- und über 100 dreizeil., mittels figürlichem Beiwerk (Pflanzen, Fabeltieren) ausgeschückten Holzschnitt-Intialen. 2°. Meistereinband um 1900 aus dunkelblauem Ganzmaroquin auf zwei Schmuckbünden über Holzdecken, mit goldgeprägtem Rückentitel nebst Angabe des Druckorts und Datierung auf dem Schwanz, mittels Doppelrahmung bzw. Punktlinie ausgeführten Fileten auf Rücken, Decken und Stehkanten, reichlich floral ornamentierten, mit drei Rahmen gefasstn Innenkantenfileten, sowie Vorsätzen aus violettem Seidenmoiré. (sign. Zaehnsdorf).

O-97 für die Erstausgabe. - Hain 12103. - IGI 7037. - Pellechet 8648. - Letzte Inkunabelausgabe und gleichzeitig fünfte Buchausgabe des 1471 von Johann Schüssler in Augsburg erstmals gedruckten Hauptwerks des frühchristlichen, vermutlich aus Portugal stammenden Theologen und Historikers Paulus Orosius (um 385 - um 420). Eine auf Aufforderung des Augustinus hin unternommene Ergänzung zu dessen 'Gottesstaat', ist das Werk "ein Abriss der Weltgeschichte in 7 Perioden und nach 4 Weltreichen geordnet von Adam bis 417, zum Nachweis, dass die vorchristliche Menschheit noch mehr vom Krieg und Elend heimgesucht worden als die Gegenwart, dass also das Christentum an der Drangsal der Zeit unschuldig sei." (LThK VII, 784). Editiert wurde Orosius' Werk für die von Hermann Liechtenstein in Vicenza gedruckte Ausgabe von 1475 (Goff O-97) von dem Humanisten Aenea Volpe, Abt eines Klosters ebendort, dessen Text auch für die vorliegende Ausgabe übernommen wurde. - Einband minimal berieben. Kopfsteg durchgehend stärker beschnitten, bei wenigen Blättern teils mit geringem Verlust des oberen Randes der Titelzeile. Erste und letzte Blätter gering finger- und schmutzfleckig, einige wenige Blätter etwas wasserrandig, sonst wohlerhaltenes Exemplar. Im prächtigen Einband aus der Werkstatt von Joseph Zaehnsdorf Nfg., einem der renommiertesten Buchbinder seiner Zeit.

Prints before 1600, Bibles, Classics in Original Languages – With 3 nine-line and more than 100 three-line wood-cut initials incorporating figurative ornaments (plants, animals). - Last incunabula edition and in the same time fifth edition of a most important work by early Christian theologian and historian Paulus Orosius (c. 385 - c. 420), first printed by Johann Schüssler in Augsburg in 1471. A supplement to Augustine's "De Civitate Dei", undertaken at his request, the work is 'an outline of world history in 7 periods and organised according to 4 global empires from Adam to 417, to prove that pre-Christian humanity was even more afflicted by war and misery than the present, that Christianity was therefore innocent of the tribulations of the time'. (LThK VII, 784). Orosius' work was edited for the 1475 edition printed by Hermann Liechtenstein in Vicenza (Goff O-97) by the humanist Aenea Volpe, abbot of a monastery there, whose text was also adopted for the present edition. - - Binding minimally worn. Upper edge more heavily trimmed throughout, a few leaves therefore partly with slight loss of the upper margin of the title line print. First and last leaves slightly finger stained and soiled, a few leaves somewhat water stained, otherwise a well-preserved copy indeed. In a splendid full morocco with rich gilt fileting from the workshop of Joseph Zaehnsdorf, one of the most renowned bookbinders of his time.
