Jahrhunderts – Cohen/Ricci 436. - Fürstenberg 122 u. 205. - Leemann-van Elck 699. - Sander 780 - Prachtvoller Didot-Druck auf gutem Papier, die in Farben gedruckten Kupfer vor der Nummerierung. - Das Frontispiz mit der Büste Gessners (und einem kleinen Gedenkstein mit dem Namen des Übersetzers) wurde von Colibert gestochen, die prächtigen Bilder zu den fünf Gesängen von ihm, Clément und Casenave. - Die rein in Farben gedruckten Kupfer vor der Schrift ("avant les numeros des pages"). "Eine Reihe kostbarer illustrierter Bucher liess der Verleger Defer de Maisonneuve von 1791 an erscheinen. Ihre Farbstiche sind aber nicht durch Mehrplattendruck, sondern von einer Platte in Punktiermanier nach dem englischen Vorbild hergestellt. Die bekanntesten unter ihnen sind Florians Galatee und Gessners Mort d'Abel" (Lex. des Buchwesens). "Eine nur kurze Blute auf dem Gebiete der Buchillustration erlebte der aus England eingefuhrte, in Frankreich zu hochster technischer und kunstlerischer Vollendung gelangte Farbstich wahrend der neunziger Jahre in einer kleinen Zahl in beschränkter Auflage hergestellter Prachtpublikationen des Verlegers Defer der Maisonneuve, die in ihrer Zeit keine Nachfolge fanden" (Kat. Furstenberg S. 88). - Breitrandige Ausgabe, seltener etwas fleckig, insgesamt gutes Exemplar.

Literature of 17th to 19th Century – With frontispiece and find color engraved plates after Monsiau. Magnificent Didot print on good paper, the copper in color printed before the numbering. - Halfcoatskin with gilded fillets, rich spine guilding and brown spine label - Broad margined edition only rarely minimally stained, altogether a good copy.
