Heinrich IIII

Alte Drucke, Bibeln, Klassische Autoren in den Originalsprachen – Früher Druck der Chronik des "Gangs nach Canossa" von Heinrich IIII. - VD16 I 97.

Prints before 1600, Bibles, Classics in Original Languages – With illustrated wood-cut printer's device on title-page (repeated on E4v), two inhabitated and ornamental wood-cut initals (over 9 lines), head-piece and vignette. - Early Frankfurt edition of the Vita of the Salian Emperor Henry IIII (1050-1106), originally written in the 12th century by Helmold von Bosau as part of his 'Slavic Chronicle', here in the humanistic adaptation by the historian Reinhard Reineck. The first edition of the 'Chronica Slavorum' was published in Frankfurt in 1559. - Henry IIII had been excommunicated by Pope Gregory VII in 1076 as a result of secular versus ecclesiastical power struggles in the 'Investiture Controversy', whereupon Henry was to embark on the famous 'Walk to Canossa'. - Separately bound copy of the account, which is usually offered in anthologies of various parts of Helmold's 'Slavic Chronicle'. - Provenance: Dr Fritz Behrend (1878-1939), philologist and archivist, with his signature on front fly leaf recto and his handwritten title label. - Paper somewhat time-stained, otherwise a well-preserved, wide-margined and elaborately printed copy of this important historical report, rarely offered in a separate edition in the trade.
