Meistereinband (ca. 1840-60) aus dunkelbraunem levantinischem Maroquin auf 8 falschen Bünden über Leichtholzdecken, mit floraler u. ornamentaler, mittels Fileten gegliederter Deckel- und Rückenvergoldung, Steh- und Innenkantenfileten, sowie dreiseit. Goldschnitt (sign. Riviere).

Alte Drucke, Bibeln, Klassische Autoren in den Originalsprachen – Seltener Heidelberger Druck mit der Erstausgabe einer frühen Beschreibung Großbritanniens, im Prachteinband von Robert Riviere. - Adams C 819. - Port 47. - ADB 4 (1876) - Der erste aus der Heidelberger Offizin des bedeutenden Druckerverlegers Hieronymus Commelius stammende Druck überhaupt, "deren Werke an Correctheit und schönem Drucke den Stephanus'schen Ausgaben der Classiker etc. an die Seite gesetzt werden können." - Das Werk versammelt historische und literarische Beschreibungen über Großbritannien von Bede, Gildas, Froissart, William von Newburgh und Geoffrey von Monmouth (mit der ältesten Fassung der Geschichte von König Lear). - Der Meistereinband von Robert Riviere (1808-92), einem der renommiertesten Londoner Buchbinder seiner Zeit, ist der goldgepr. Sign. auf der Innenkante des Vorderspiegels zu schließen mit 1840-1860 zu datieren. - Provenienz: Leybourne Grange, psychiatrische Anstalt auf den Ländereien der Barone Leybourne, Kent, mit gestoch. illustr. Ex-Libris unter Verwendung des Familienwappens motiert auf dem Vorderspiegel. - Der Prunkeinband mit geringen Kratzspuren, an den Ecken, Kanten und Gelenken mitunter geringfügig berieben, Ex-Libris und entferntes Besitzeretikett des Vorderspiegels mit Abklatsch auf flieg. Vorsatz recto, innen vereinzelt minimal stock-, finger- und tintenfleckig, sonst sehr gut erhaltenes Rarum im vorzüglichen Einband.

Prints before 1600, Bibles, Classics in Original Languages – Early accounts of England, Scotland and Wales, this copy of noble English provenance and in a splendid binding by Riviere. - The first ever Heidelberg imprint of the important printer-publisher Hieronymus Commelius, 'whose works can be placed alongside the Stephanus editions of the classics etc. in terms of correctness and beautiful printing' (ADB). - The Venerable Bede, Geoffrey of Monmouth (the earliest known version of the story of King Lear and his three daughters, and the introduction to non-Welsh-Speakers of the legend of King Arthur), Gildas, William of Newburgh, and Froissart, all in one volume. Geoffrey's "Historia" was first printed by Badius Asvanius at Paris in 1508. Another edition appeared in 1517 and next was the present one. - The master binding by Robert Riviere (1808-92), one of the most renowned London bookbinders of his time, according to the gilt embossed signature on bottom paste-dowen executed around 1840-1860. - Provenance: Leybourne Grange, psychiatric asylum on the estates of the Barons Leybourne, Kent, with engraved illustrated book-plate using the family coat of arms on front paste-down. - Binding with minor scratches, corners, edges and joints occasionally very slightly worn, book-plate and removed owner's label with offset on front fly-leaf. Inside sporadically minimally foxed, finger- and ink-stained, otherwise well-preserved copy indeed.
