M. Nikolskij (1858-1942) gilt als führender russischer Herpetologe seiner Zeit und leitete seit 1895 die herpetologische Abteilung des Museums für Zoologie der Russischen Akademie der Wissenschaften in St. Petersburg. In seinem Ansatz verband Nikolskij Systematik und Empirie, und inkludierte er im Gegensatz zu seinen Vorgängern auch zoogeographische Aspekte. - In der vorliegenden ersten Buchausgabe seiner Abhandlung behandelt der Verfasser 123 verschiedene Arten von Reptilien (Schildkröten, Echsen und Schlagen (50), sowie 27 Spezien von Amphibien (Fröschen u. Salamandern). - Provenienz: 1. Königlich Batavische Gesellschaft der Künste und Wissenschaften, Jakarta (sh. Stempel a. d. Umschl.) - 2. Kraig Adler (geb. 1940), bedeutender U.S.-amerikanischer Herpetologe, mit dessen Ex Libris auf dem Vorderspiegel und Bibliotheksstempel auf dem ersten Vorsatzblatt recto. - Stellenweise leicht fingerfl., and den Rändern mitunter gering stockfl., Tafeln leicht wasserrandig, papierbedingt gebräunt, insgesamt wohlerhaltenes, sehr sammelwürdiges Rarissimum mit ansprechender Provenienz.

Natural Sciences – First complete scientific review of the reptiles and amphibians of Russia, with 2 lithographic plates depicting a total of 12, mostly large-format figures after drawings by N. Tronyn, as well as 4 text illustrations. - Particularly rare, currently no copy available in the trade and historically untraceable at auctions. - A. M. Nikolsky (1858-1942) is considered the leading Russian herpetologist of his time and headed the herpetological department of the Museum of Zoology of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg from 1895 onwards. Nikolsky's approach combined systematics and empiricism, and unlike his predecessors, he also included zoogeographical aspects in his research. - In present first book edition of his account, the author covers 123 species of reptiles (turtles, lizards and snakes (50), as well as 27 amphibians (frogs, salamanders). - Provenance: 1. Royal Dutch Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences (see stamp and address label). - 2. Kraig Adler (born 1940), prominent American herpetologist, with his ex libris on the front paste-down and his owner's stamp on the first fly leaf recto. - Ex-library copy, stamped and with hand-written annotations of the above mentioned institution on the bound in original front cover, slightly finger-stained in places, occasionally slightly foxed at the edges, plates water-stained at margins, time-stained to the paper, overall well-preserved, very collectible rarity with appealing provenance.
