Zoologie - Herpetologie

Naturwissenschaften – Erste Ausgabe von Nikolskijs Grundlagenwerk zur Herpetologie Zentralasiens. - Adler I, S. 68f.

Natural Sciences – First edition of Nikolsky's standard work on the herpetology of Central Asia, with 9, partly tinted, lithographed plates, mostly with several large-format illustrations and after drawings by A. Sewastjanow. - Particularly rare, currently no copy available and historically untraceable at auctions. According to WorldCat and KVK, only four copies in institutions worldwide, with no copies in Germany. - A. M. Nikolsky (1858-1942) is considered the leading Russian herpetologist of his time and headed the herpetological department of the Museum of Zoology of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg from 1895 onwards. Nikolsky's approach combined systematics and empiricism, and unlike his predecessors, he also included zoogeographical aspects in his research. - Present work concernes the Fedchenko expedition to Turkestan and was published as pt. VII in vol. II of the corresponding multivolume edition describing this expedition. - Ex-library copy, stamped and with handwritten annotations on title page verso, the skilfully lithographed plates water-stained and foxy, time-stained due to the paper, overall a solid, collectible copy of this rare item.
