In seinem Ansatz verband Nikolskij Systematik und Empirie, und inkludierte er im Gegensatz zu seinen Vorgängern auch zoogeographische Aspekte. - In der vorliegenden ersten Buchausgabe seiner Abhandlung behandelt der Verfasser 61 verschiedene Arten von Reptilien (Schildkröten, Echsen und Schlagen (29), sowie 14 Spezien von Amphibien (Fröschen u. Salamandern). Er führt eine neue Schlangenart ein, zudem auch eine neue Subspezies dieses Tiers. Auf Russisch, die Taxonomie in lateinischer Sprache. Provenienz: Kraig Adler (geb. 1940), bedeutender U.S.-amerikanischer Herpetologe, mit dessen Ex Libris auf dem Vorderspiegel. - Ehemaliges Bibliotheksexemplar mit mehrfach gestempeltem und teils hs. annotiertem Titelbl., stellenweise mit Randläsuren und etw. fingerfl., papierbedingt stärker gebräunt, insgesamt gut erhaltenes Rarum.

Natural Sciences – Standard work on the herpetology of the Caucasus, with 3 lithographic plates, of which 1 in chromolithography, as well as 4 text illustrations with a total of 11 figures. - Very rare, no auctions results traceable for us whatsoever. - A. M. Nikolsky (1858-1942) is considered the leading Russian herpetologist of his time and headed the herpetological department of the Museum of Zoology of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg from 1895 onwards. Nikolsky's approach combined systematics and empiricism, and unlike his predecessors, he also included zoogeographical aspects in his research. In present first book edition of his account, the author covers 61 species of reptiles (turtles, lizards and snakes (29), as well as 14 amphibians (frogs, salamanders). He also introduces a new species of snake, as well as a new subspecies of this animal. In Russian, with the taxonomy in Latin. Provenance: Kraig Adler (born 1940), prominent American herpetologist, with his ex libris on the front paste-down. - Ex-library copy with multiple stamps and some handwritten annotations on the title page, some minor faults at margins and finger-stained, time-stained due to the paper, overall a well-preserved and highly collectible rarity with a superb provenance.
