Ritter (1776-1810) gilt als bedeutendster Physiker der Romantik und Begründer der Elektrochemie, zudem einer der wichtigsten Anreger der deutschen Romantik. Novalis sagte von ihm: "Ritter ist Ritter und wir sind nur Knappen" (1799 an Caroline Schlegel). Bei der Zusammenstellung des physikalischen Kabinetts wurde Goethe von Ritter beraten. - Jürgen Daiber hat einen wichtigen Artikel (in DIE ZEIT, 1998, Nr. 37) über den "elektrisierten Physiker" verfasst und liefert einen beeindruckenden "Bericht über wissenschaftliche Besessenheit, deutsche Romantik und selbstmörderische Dialektik: Wie sich Johann Wilhelm Ritter im Jahre 1809 zu Tode experimentierte". Er "war der erste, der eine zutreffende Erklärung für die Wirkungsweise der Voltasäule gab ... erkannte auch bereits 1805 klar die Grundlagen für das Ohmsche Gesetz" (Matschoss) und entdeckte als erster die chemische Wirkung der UV-Strahlen. Natural Sciences – Physics. - With 22 partly folded plates. The brilliant physicist J. W. Ritter (1776-1810) is considered the most important physicist of the Romantic period and the founder of electrochemistry, as well as one of the most important inspirers of German Romanticism. Novalis said of him: "Ritter is a knight and we are only squires" (1799 to Caroline Schlegel). Goethe was advised by Ritter when putting together his physics cabinet. Jürgen Daiber wrote an important article (in DIE ZEIT, 1998, No. 37) about the "electrified physicist" and provides an impressive "report on scientific obsession, German Romanticism, and suicidal dialectics: How Johann Wilhelm Ritter experimented himself to death in 1809." He "was the first to provide an accurate explanation of how the voltaic pile worked ... and already in 1805 clearly recognized the fundamentals of Ohm's law" (Matschoss) and was the first to discover the chemical effect of UV rays.
