Nicerons "La perspective curieuse" widmet sich in vier Büchern grundlegenden und zugleich innovativen Themen der Perspektivlehre: Das erste Buch behandelt verschiedene Methoden der Perspektive. Im zweiten Buch geht es um die geometrische Anamorphose, also um verzerrte Bilder, die nur aus einem bestimmten Blickwinkel als korrekt erscheinen. Das dritte Buch beschäftigt sich mit zylindrischen und konischen Spiegeln (catoptrique), die Spiegelbilder erzeugen. Das vierte Buch behandelt optische Phänomene in durchsichtigen Körpern (dioptrique) wie Kristallen und Linsen. Die "optique et catoptrique" des R.P. Mersenne sind an das Hauptwerk angegliedert und thematisieren ebenfalls optische Effekte und Spiegelungen. Marin Mersenne, eine zentrale Figur der Wissenschaftsgeschichte und selbst Mentor von Niceron, brachte nach Nicerons frühem Tod (1646) die Arbeit mit Ergänzungen zur Veröffentlichung und führte sie damit fort. Niceron war ein bekannter Mathematiker, Künstler und Mitglied des Mersenne-Kreises. Das Buch steht im Zentrum des "goldenen Zeitalters der Anamorphose" und diente Generationen von Künstlern, Mathematikern und Wissenschaftlern als Handbuch, es enthält präzise mathematische Anleitungen zur Erstellung anamorphotischer Kunstwerke, Reflexionen und optischen Experimenten. Seine Schriften illustrieren nicht nur mathematisch-optische Effekte, sondern bieten auch zahlreiche Kupferstiche und grafische Beispiele aus der damaligen Zeit. It contains precise mathematical instructions for creating anamorphic works of art, reflections and optical experiments. His writings not only illustrate mathematical and optical effects, but also feature numerous copperplate engravings and graphic examples from the period.
