Naturwissenschaften – Erste englische Ausgabe in Edmond Halleys Übersetzung von Oughtreds klassischem Werk, Clavis Mathematicae. - Mit Besitzvermerk von Gabriel Stokes. - William Oughtred (1574-1660) war ein englischer Mathematiker, der vor allem für seine Erfindung des auf Logarithmen basierenden Rechenschiebers bekannt ist. Er führte das Symbol "×" für die Multiplikation, die Abkürzungen "sin" und "cos" für die trigonometrischen Funktionen Sinus und Kosinus und das Proportionszeichen ("::") ein. Oughtred wurde von Thomas Howard, dem zweiten Grafen von Arundel, beauftragt, seinen Sohn in Mathematik zu unterrichten. Arithmeticae in numeris et speciebus institutio Clavis Mathematicae die lateinische Version des Schlüssels der Mathematiker, wurde für diesen Schüler zusammengestellt und erstmals 1631 veröffentlicht. - Mit Randnotizen und Diagrammen in Tinte von Stokes. Papier altersbedingt gebräunt. Insgesamt in sehr gutem Zustand.

He introduced the "×" symbol for multiplication, the abbreviations "sin" and "cos" for the trigonometric functions sine and cosine, and the proportion sign ("::"). Oughtred was appointed by Thomas Howard, second earl of Arundel to teach his son mathematics. Arithmeticae in numeris et speciebus institutio Clavis Mathematicae, the Latin version of the Key of the Mathematicks was compiled for this pupil and published first in 1631. - With marginal notes and diagrams in ink by Stokes throughout. Paper tanned due to ageing. Overall in very good condition.
