Mathematik

- Zisska, G. A. Index Lexicorum, S. 224.

Natural Sciences – Second, most comprehensive edition of the meritorious, richly illustrated dictionary of mathematics. - Zisska, G. A. Index Lexicorum, p. 224 - Charles Hutton (1737-1823) was an English mathematician and surveyor, as well as professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy from 1773 to 1807. He is particularly remembered for his calculation of the density of the earth (1774). The present dictionary, which he compiled with great accuracy, is a valuable contribution to the lexicography of mathematics and its applications in contemporary meteorology and astronomy, architecture and civil engineering, hydrology, fortress construction, mechanical engineering, etc. - The most impressive engraved plates include No. XII, a 'General view of a fortress', and No. XV, 'Herschel's telescope'. - The first edition of this important reference work was published in 1796. - 5 plates XXXVI-XL are missing. Spine expertly renewed including most of the original material, covers slightly rubbed, interior occasionally slightly foxed, otherwise a well-preserved copy with fresh plates.
