Die allesamt nicht signierten oder monogrammierten Holzschnitte verschiedener Schneider mit Porträtdarstellungen Barbarossas, Schlachenszenen und Belagerungsstürmen samt dem zugehörigen Kriegsgerät nach den Illustrationen aus Valturius' "De re militari" von 1472. Ferner mit einer formidablen blattfüllenden Ansicht von Venedig mit stilisierter Sicht von Norden aus, der Campanile rechts, die Basilica San Marco links, sowie einem grossen Segelschiff unter der Flagge des Heiligen Römischen Reichs (ein Eroberungstraum?) in der Lagune dahinter. - Titelbl. mit ausgefüllter Fehlstelle ohne Beeinträchtigung des Titeldrucks, stellenweise mit schmalem Wasserrand und fleckig, papierbedingt gebräunt, vorderer fliegender Vorsatz mit bibliographischen Angaben aus dem 19. Jh., hinterer fliegender Vorsatz mit Ausschnitt. Insgesamt gut erhaltenes Exemplar des prachtvollen Werks.

Prints before 1600, Bibles, Classics in Original Languages – Early and rare biography of Frederick I of Hohenstaufen with magnificent woodcuts. - For references see above. - Third edition of this work first published in 1520, written by Johannes Adelphus, also called Mulichius (d. 1523), a physician and and polyhistor who worked primarily in Strasbourg and Schaffhausen. - The woodcuts are from the collection of Grüninger's office, which he used repeatedly in varying compositions starting in 1498. All unsigned or monogrammed and by various cutters, they depicting portraits of Barbarossa, battle scenes, and siege storms, including the associated military equipment, based on the illustrations from Valturius' "De re militari" of 1472. Also included is a formidable full-page view of Venice, unconventionally stylized from the north, with the Campanile on the right, the Basilica of San Marco on the left, and a large sailing ship flying the flag of the Holy Roman Empire (a dream of conquest?) in the lagoon behind. Title page with a restored fault, not affecting the title print, narrow water-stains and foxed in places, time-stained throughout, front fly-leaf with bibliographical remarks from the 19th century, rear fly-leaf with a cutout. Overall, a well-preserved copy of this magnificent work.
