Avantgarde - Russland - Rodtschenko, A. M.
- Dabei: Assejew, Nikolai, Isbran Stichi 1912-1922. (Ausles. Gedichte aus den Jahren 1912-1922.) Mit Einbandgestaltung von Alexander Rodtschenko. Moskau, Krug, 1923. 128 S., 2 Bll. OKarton (leicht fleckig). - Erste Ausgabe.
Modern Literature and Art – 2 Russian first editions with cover designs by Alexander Rodchenko. - 1. The best-known work resulting from the collaboration between the Russian avant-garde poet S. Kirsanov and Alexander Rodchenko, the principal founder of Russian Constructivism. The book was printed in 1930 by the Soviet state publishing house Federacija in Moscow in a small print run of only 3,000 copies. Immediately after its publication, the work came under fierce ideological criticism. Kirsanov was accused of an "ideological breakdown." His fantastical, dystopian vision of the future was attacked as "petty-bourgeois," and the work was never reprinted thereafter. - Small number on title page, slightly browned, overall a good copy. - With 2.: Assejev, Nikolai, *Isbran Stichi 1912-1922*. (Selected Poems from 1912-1922.) With cover design by Alexander Rodchenko. 1923. Hardcover (slightly stained). - First edition. - This book marks Assejev's transition from classical Russian Futurism (he was a close friend and comrade-in-arms of Vladimir Mayakovsky) to revolutionary Romanticism. The striking, radically abstract cover design is by Alexander Rodchenko and was created at the absolute peak of his phase of purely typographic Constructivism. The most striking feature of the cover is the word "Izbran," an idiosyncratic, futuristic neologism coined by Assejev to denote a selection or anthology of his works. Rodchenko set this word in massive, bold, black block letters.
