Avantgarde - Russland - Nivinsky, Ignatij Ignatjewitsch

Jahrhunderts in außergewöhnlich dichter Form fest.

Modern Literature and Art – With 12 colour lithographs, 14 zincographs, numerous vignettes, and illustrations after photographs by Ignatij Nivinsky. Large 4to. 33.2 × 24.8 cm. 222 pp., leaf. Original colour-illustrated printed wrappers (with minor wear to the covers). Bowlt/Hernad 75 - Compton, p. 158 - Hellyer 134 - Rowell/Wye 493. - First edition of this splendidly produced documentation of Yevgeny Vakhtangov's legendary production of Carlo Gozzi's Turandot, first performed on 28 February 1922 at the Third Studio of the Moscow Art Theatre and regarded as one of the seminal events of Russian avant-garde theatre. The publication combines the text of Gozzi's Venetian fairy-tale play with contributions concerning the production, its artistic conception, and its contemporary reception, thus preserving one of the formative theatrical productions of the early twentieth century in exceptionally rich detail. Particularly striking is the visual design by Ignaty Ignatyevich Nivinsky (1881-1933), the production's set and costume designer: twelve colour lithographic plates reproduce his costume and stage designs, while the zincographs and numerous photographic illustrations document the actors, stage settings, and theatrical realisation. Nivinsky also designed the cover and vignettes, the elaborately produced chromolithographs, mezzotints, and zincographs were printed at Mospoligraf's First Model Printing House. An important and rare document of Russian book and stage design of the 1920s, and at the same time a major work of illustrated theatrical publishing from the early Soviet period. Slightly browned due to paper, altogether good copy.
