Literature of 17th to 19th Century – A key work in the history of French statecraft, written to give legal backing to France's expansionist foreign policy during the Thirty Years' War. - Cf. Cioranescu, XVII, 17942. - In it, Cassan argued for France's historical claims to kingdoms, duchies and cities all over Europe. These included territories in the Holy Roman Empire (such as Alsace and Lorraine), in Italy, and parts of Spain and Flanders. Jacques de Cassan was a royal counsellor (Conseiller du Roi) and chief advocate in Béziers in the south of France. He wrote the work directly in support of Cardinal Richelieu, to give French aggression against the Habsburgs a legal cloak. - Ownership inscription on title page and last page. First leaves with a faint damp stain that quickly fades out.
