Architecture – Second German edition, expanded with several additional plates, of this richly illustrated architectural work, which for over a century was regarded as the finest treatise on architectural science in France. Cf. Berliner Ornamentstichkatalog 2391 (first edition, 1699) and Fowler 32f. (French edition). The copperplates depict portals, chimneypieces, garden plans, stoves, railings, and staircases, together with elevations of buildings, columns, capitals, and the like, as well as structures by Michelangelo and Vignola. This richly illustrated architectural treatise from the Baroque Augsburg publishing trade offers one of the most important German-language compendiums of classical building theory from the eighteenth century. It is based on the celebrated Cours d'architecture by the French royal architect Augustin-Charles d'Aviler, which first appeared in Paris in 1691 and was regarded throughout Europe as the normative textbook of architectural theory. The German version was translated by the eminent architect and architectural theorist Leonhard Christoph Sturm (1669 to 1719) and expanded with numerous notes of his own as well as additional plates, after a first translation had already appeared in 1699 with Huguetan in Amsterdam. At the heart of the work stand the five orders of columns according to Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola, the great architect of the Italian Renaissance, whose Regola delli cinque ordini d'architettura had been regarded as the standard work on the theory of the orders since the sixteenth century. The presentation is supplemented by biographies as well as by a detailed treatment of the principal buildings of Vignola and Michelangelo, making the book function both as a practical building guide and as an art-historical compendium of Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Bookplate on the inside cover, occasionally somewhat stained, several plates browned along the centerfold, one double-page plate present only in half.
