Lot 254 Palästina-Kalender 5698 …

Palästina-Kalender 5698 (1937). Berlin, 1937. 52 S. Illustr. Originalbroschur (kleine Defekte am Umschlag).

Judaica

History – A rare calendar for the Jewish year 5698, published in Berlin in 1937 and thus under the conditions of the National Socialist dictatorship. The publication combines the practical function of an annual calendar with a richly illustrated section: numerous photographic images on its calendar pages depict aspects of Jewish settlement in Eretz Israel, including landscapes, towns, agricultural work, communal life, and the infrastructural development of Jewish Palestine. The photographs convey a programmatic image of building, modernization, and self-organization, making the booklet a vivid contemporary document of Zionist visual and commemorative culture. Its Berlin imprint is of particular historical significance: it records the continuing cultural, religious, and ideological ties of German Jews to Eretz Israel at a time of increasing disenfranchisement, exclusion, and persecution.
