Manuscripts – Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) - 2 albums of the Neuendorff family, Berlin With 30 and 51 large-format hand drawings and photographs respectively. Ca. 1892-1934. Folio and oblong folio. Leather album with an elaborate tooled-leather (Lederschnitt) image on the cover, plus unbound album leaves on heavy card. The leaves are loose or gathered in screw-post binders with green and burgundy cloth spines. The leaves are card pages with mounted silver gelatin and albumen prints as well as picture postcards. The photographs are embedded in full-page, hand-painted compositions in gouache and watercolour. They are partly heightened with ink, white body colour and gold bronze, and partly inscribed. The magnificent albums document the life of the Neuendorff family in their house on Bayernallee in Berlin, their education (Eichkamp school, Berlin), their travels (Venice, Müritz, St. Moritz, Oberuff, Berchtesgaden, Knole Lodge, Bad Pyrmont, Neupfalz near Stromberg) and work (nurse at the Heiliggeist Hospital, 1917). The large-format single leaves also belong to a personal memory album of the Neuendorff family, with the parents Karl and Wilhelmine, together with Annemarie, Ursula and Barbara. The family can be traced in the Berlin address books through the father, the lawyer Karl Neuendorff: 1921 Westendallee 97b, 1924-1930 Bayernallee 5 (Charlottenburg-Westend), from 1931 until at least 1943 as the owner of the house at Falterweg 29 in the Eichkamp housing estate. Professionally, he was deputy syndic and association syndic of the Verband der Deutschen Berufsgenossenschaften (Berlin W 9, Köthener Str. 37, from 1941 Reichsverband der gewerblichen Berufsgenossenschaften, Nikolsburger Platz 4) and managing director of Unfallverhütungsbild GmbH. They show the everyday life of the upper middle class of Berlin in the Wilhelmine Empire and the Weimar Republic. Each page is designed as an independent work of art. The painted ground is matched to each travel destination. Examples include marbled architecture for Venice, rhododendrons for Bournemouth, oak-leaf tendrils for Bad Pyrmont and blue snowscapes for St. Moritz. An impressive documentation, spanning almost 50 years, of an upper-middle-class family in Berlin.
