Verhandlungen zu Schmidts Mitarbeit an einer "wirklichen großen Poe-Ausgabe, aber unter zwei Bedingungen: a) ich muß mir meine Stücke selbst auswählen ... und ich müßte beträchtliche Zeit darauf verwenden können. Dieser 2. Punkt nun eben würde Sie b) vielleicht nicht so billig zu stehen kommen, wie Sie als Kaufmann wünschen möchten ... die Arbeit eines Galerensklaven wäre leicht und ruhmvoll verglichen mit Mühe und Anerkennung eines Poe-Übersetzers-" - Außerdem Schmidts Übersetzung von James Fenimore Coopers "Die Beweinte von Wish-ton-Wish", Überlegungen zu einer Cooper- oder Scott-Ausgabe. - Dabei: Arno Schmidt: Vorschläge für eine Poe-Auswahl. Autographs – Collection of 3 typewritten letters signed, addressed to Harald Ebner, director of Karl Rauch Verlag. - Each bearing the publisher's receipt stamp. - Concerns Schmidt's collaboration on a "truly great edition of Poe, but on two conditions: ... I must be able to select the pieces myself ... and I must be able to devote a considerable amount of time to it. This second point, however, might not come to you quite as cheaply as you, as a businessman, might wish ... the labour of a galley slave would be light and glorious compared to the toil and recognition of a Poe translator." (trans.). - Also Schmidt's translation of James Fenimore Cooper's "The Weeping Woman of Wish-ton-Wish", reflections on an edition of Cooper or Scott. - In add.: Arno Schmidt's Proposals for a Poe anthology.
