Klassische Moderne
Online - Modern and Contemporary Art – Woodcut on Japan. Monogrammed in the block. - A slight crease in the top left-hand corner, minimal staining on the reverse. Overall very good. Superb, strong impression with wide margin. - In one of his black-and-white woodcuts, Gottfried Graf depicts the figure of Ganymede alongside Zeus in the form of an eagle, during his abduction from Mount Ida in Phrygia to Mount Olympus. The artist deliberately chose not to use colour, as 'black and white, as the ultimate simplification of means, ... conveys a sense of spiritual concentration in contrast to coloured prints', as Graf wrote in 1927 in his work 'Der neue Holzschnitt und das Problem der künstlerischen Gestaltung' (The New Woodcut and the Problem of Artistic Composition).
