Expressionismus

Online - Modern and Contemporary Art – Gouache on handmade paper. Signed. Partially mounted on backing board and framed under glass. - Slight creasing and scuffing, subtle studio marks on the reverse. Overall in good condition. A colourful, expressive work. - An expressive depiction of an imagined seascape with volcanoes, rendered in a high-contrast colour scheme of muted browns alongside vibrant blues and reds. The work is characteristic of the Berlin Secessionist's oeuvre, which is distinguished by depictions of monumental landscapes. Erich Waske studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin in the early 20th century and exhibited alongside Kirchner, Heckel and Pechstein in the 1920s. Art historian and critic Will Grohmann, who compiled Erich Waske's catalogue raisonné in 1958, described Waske's art as a "modified Brücke style". During the Nazi era, Waske's works were classified as "degenerate".
