Konkrete Kunst – Wir danken dem Estate Friedrich Gräsel für die nachträgliche Aufnahme in das Werkverzeichnis. - Die vorliegende Edelstahlmarkette steht charakteristisch für Gräsels Arbeiten, in denen der Künstler hauptsächlich industriell gefertigte Materialien und Bauelemente verwendete. Aus vorproduzierten Stahlprofilen und Röhren schuf er autonome plastische Kompositionen, deren einzelne Elemente in spannungsreiche Beziehungen zueinander treten und den umgebenden Raum neu strukturieren. Besonders seine monumentalen öffentlichen Röhrenskulpturen zeichnen sich durch ein intensives Wechselspiel mit Architektur, Landschaft und Betrachter aus und verweisen zugleich auf die industrielle Prägung des Ruhrgebiets. Gräsel studierte von 1952 bis 1956 an den Kunsthochschulen in München und Hamburg bei bedeutenden Vertretern der Nachkriegskunst, wie Werner Haftmann und Ernst Wilhelm Nay. Nach einer zunächst der Malerei gewidmeten Schaffensphase wandte sich der Bochumer Künstler nur sechs Jahre vor Entstehung der vorliegenden Arbeit 1968 konsequent der Bildhauerei zu. Mit seinen konstruktiven, raumbezogenen Arbeiten zählt Gräsel zu den wichtigen Vertretern der deutschen Nachkriegsskulptur. Seine Werke wurden 1972 auf der 36. Biennale von Venedig als offizieller Beitrag der Bundesrepublik Deutschland präsentiert.

Overall in good condition. - We would like to thank the Estate of Friedrich Gräsel for the subsequent inclusion of this work in the catalogue raisonné. - The present stainless-steel maquette is characteristic of Friedrich Gräsel's artistic practice, in which he primarily employed industrially manufactured materials and construction elements. Using prefabricated steel profiles and tubular forms, he created autonomous sculptural compositions whose individual components engage in dynamic relationships with one another while redefining the surrounding space. His monumental public tube sculptures, in particular, are distinguished by their intense interaction with architecture, landscape, and the viewer, while also evoking the industrial heritage of Germany's Ruhr region. Gräsel studied from 1952 to 1956 at the academies of fine arts in Munich and Hamburg under influential figures of post-war German art, including Werner Haftmann and Ernst Wilhelm Nay. After an initial period devoted to painting, the Bochum-based artist made a decisive turn to sculpture in 1968, only six years before the creation of the present work. Through his constructive and spatially oriented oeuvre, Gräsel established himself as one of the leading representatives of post-war German sculpture. In 1972, his work was selected as the official contribution of the Federal Republic of Germany to the 36th Venice Biennale.
