Lot 462 Thomas Demand. 5 Arbeiten. In: Five Drafts …

5 Arbeiten. In: Five Drafts (Simulator). 2004.

Photographie - Moderne Photographie – Lange S.344. - Je eines von 60 Exemplaren. - Hg.

Modern Photography – Each digital pigment print on photo rag paper. One print signed and numbered. - Overall, in very good condition. Magnificent, high-contrast prints with wide margins, the colours with a velvety, grainy effect. - Lange S.344. - One of 60 copies. - Published by Edition Schellmann, Munich/New York, for the Kunsthaus Bregenz. - The five sheets depict a cardboard model of Demand's large-scale work *Space Simulator* from 2003, which takes as its subject a NASA space flight simulator from the 1960s. The edition thus documents not the finished work, but its creative process and its drafts. This encapsulates Demand's core artistic principle: he constructs three-dimensional models from paper and cardboard based on real-life models, photographs them, and then destroys the model. What remains is solely the image. The Five Drafts take this logic a step further back and make the maquette itself the subject: the model becomes a model that in turn simulates a historical original. This creates a chain of representation and reality broken at multiple points, bringing questions of authenticity, representation and construction to the fore.
