Geburtstag des Künstlers. - In dem vorliegenden Mappenwerk von Mel Ramos verdichtet er die für sein Ouevre prägenden Themen zu einer einzigen Komposition. Die Publikation erschien im Kontext der gleichnamigen Installation in der Hamburger Galerie Levy, für die ein vollständiger Supermarkt aufgebaut wurde, dessen Waren sämtlich aus Ramos' Bildwelt stammen. Das Mappenwerk überführt diesen Gedanken ins Druckgraphische: Die Grenzen zwischen Künstlerbuch, Werkverzeichnis und Warenkatalog werden bewusst offengehalten. Ramos, der die Verschaltung von weiblichem Körper, Markenprodukt und Werbeästhetik seit Jahrzehnten als künstlerisches Verfahren betreibt, findet hier eine Form, die das Ouvre selbst als Supermarkt-Sortiment lesbar macht - und die Frage, was Kunst von Ware unterscheidet, ein weiteres Mal produktiv unbeantwortet lässt.

The publication appeared in conjunction with the installation of the same name at the Levy Gallery in Hamburg, for which an entire supermarket was constructed, its goods all drawn from Ramos's visual world. The portfolio translates this concept into print: The boundaries between artist's book, catalogue raisonné and product catalogue are deliberately left open. Ramos, who has been exploring the interplay between the female body, branded products and advertising aesthetics as an artistic practice for decades, finds here a form that renders the oeuvre itself legible as a supermarket assortment - and once again leaves the question of what distinguishes art from merchandise productively unanswered.
