Lot 297 Max Schwimmer. 22 Arbeiten. Um 1925. Je …

22 Arbeiten. Insgesamt gut. Detailreiche Arbeiten in feiner Aquarellierung.

Classical Modernism – Each India ink and watercolor on wove paper. Each verso with estate stamp. - Paper slightly cockled due to the technique, with minimal stains and foxing, margins partly with minor tears. Overall in good condition. Detailed works with delicate watercoloring. - The present group of 22 sheets depicts scenes of everyday life, figure studies, and humorous observations. They belong to the characteristic occasional drawings of the Leipzig artist, in which he captured everyday situations and figures in a concise and succinct manner. These drawings from his early period reflect the influence of Expressionism, particularly that of the artists' group 'Brücke'. Recurring motifs include anthropomorphized animals, represented here by a polar bear and a donkey. After beginning his studies in art history in Leipzig in 1919, Max Schwimmer later taught at the local School of Applied Arts until his dismissal for political reasons in 1933. Parts of his oeuvre were subsequently denounced by the National Socialists as "degenerate art."
