Boxpause. 1923. Radierung auf Velin. 17,8 x 24,7 cm (35,3 x 52,3 cm). Signiert und nummeriert. - Im eh. Passepartoutausschnitt mehrfach leicht gebräunt, am rechten Rand mit wenigen leichten Knickspuren, am linken Rand ganz punktuelle, sehr leichte Griffspur, in drei Ecken blass gebräunt bzw. mit winzigen Braunflecken, im Oberrand mittig links ein kleiner Einriss (ca. 1,2 cm), rechts neben der Darstellung punktuelle Druckstelle, verso in oberen Ecken schmale Montierungsspuren, insgesamt gut. Ausgezeichneter Druck mit wirkungsvoll bearbeitetem Plattenton und herrlicher Gratwirkung, mit blind druckender Facette und breitem Rand.

Klassische Moderne – Krüger R 157. - Eines von 60 Exemplaren. - Selten. - Pechstein befasst sich bereits um 1910 während seiner Zeit als Mitglied der "Brücke" mit dem Motiv des Boxkampfes und hält es im Medium der Zeichnung fest. Einige Jahre später übersetzt er es in das Medium der Graphik, das ihm die Möglichkeit eines experimentelleren Ausdrucks gibt. Unser Blatt entsteht in einer Zeit persönlicher Umbrüche, Erfolge und Niederlagen, die einem Boxkampf gleichen: 1922/23 trennt er sich von seiner Frau Lotte und heiratet in zweiter Ehe Marta Möller, die Preußische Akademie der Künste wählt ihn zum Mitglied, Pechstein erhält eine nominelle Professur, er bricht mit seinem Kunsthändler Wolfgang Gurlitt und geht gerichtlich gegen ihn vor, wodurch er seine finanzielle Sicherheit verliert. In "Boxpause" ruhen sich alle Beteiligten der mehrfiguren Darstellung vor der nächsten Runde aus, die stellvertretend für Pechsteins Wieder-Aufstehen dieser Zeit gesehen werden kann.

Classical Modernism – Etching on wove paper. Signed and numebred. - In former mat section repeatedly slightly browned, few slight crease marks in right margin, very isolated, very slight handling mark in left margin, slighly browned or rather with tiny brown stains in three corners, small marginal tear in upper middle left (ca. 1.2 cm), pressure point on right next to depiction, verso small traces of mounting in upper corners, all in all good. Superb impression with effective plate tone and burr, with blindly impressed facet and wide margin. - One of 60 copies. - Rare. - As early as 1910 during his time as a member of "Brücke" Pechstein was already exploring the motif of the boxing match and capturing it in drawings. A few years later he translates it into the medium of printmaking which affords him the opportunity for a more experimental form of expression. Our print was created during a period of personal upheavals, successes, and defeats that resemble a boxing match: In 1922-23 he separates from his wife Lotte and married Marta Möller in his second marriage, the Prussian Academy of Arts elects him a member, Pechstein is awarded a nominal professorship, he breaks ties with his art dealer Wolfgang Gurlitt and takes legal action against him, thereby unsecuring his financial stability. In "Boxpaus," all the figures are resting before the next round which can be seen as symbolic of Pechstein's resilience during this period.
