Lot 261 Lovis Corinth. Bei den Corinthern. 1920. …

Bei den Corinthern. 1920.

Klassische Moderne – Schwarz 380. - Eins von 90 Exemplaren (GA 100 Ex.). - Herausgegeben von E. A. Seemann, Leipzig.

Classical Modernism – Half-leather portfolio with complete text and 14 drypoint etchings on yellow J.W. Zanders laid paper with watermark, 31.7 × 24.5 cm (44.2 × 36 cm), with wide margins, loose as issued. Each signed and numbered. A few sheets with minor edge creases. Overall good condition. - Magnificent impressions of velvety, vibrant black, whose raised drypoint burr on warm laid paper transforms every line into a living stroke of the hand - fleeting and enduring at once. Schwarz 380. - One of 90 copies (total edition 100). - Published by E. A. Seemann, Leipzig. The portfolio Bei den Corinthern brings together a series of etchings in which Corinth exemplifies his predilection for dramatically condensed figure scenes and the interplay between antique motif and modern social study. In tightly composed group portraits he probes the tension between pathos and irony, bourgeois representation and latent theatricality. The characteristically free, nervous line, the interplay of dense hatching and unprinted passages, and the emphatic use of chiaroscuro lend the scenes a theatrical, almost improvisatory quality. The "Corinthians" appear less as historical figures than as the artist's contemporaries - role-playing embodiments of a society oscillating between moral posturing and sensuous self-display. The portfolio thus ranks among those graphic works by Corinth in which narrative density and psychological observation combine to exceptional effect.
