La Tauromaquia. 1929. Mit 40 Aquatinta-Radierungen im Format 8,5 x 13,3 cm (17,5 x 22,5 cm). Mit dem Blindstempel der Goya-Efigie. 41 Bll.

Fin de Siecle – With 40 aquatint etchings measuring 8.5 x 13.3 cm (17.5 x 22.5 cm). Bearing the blind-stamped Goya effigy. 41 leaves. Red leather with gold-embossed fillets. - Magnificent prints with rich tonal variation, in which the combination of etching and aquatint unfolds a broad spectrum ranging from warm midtones to deep, velvety darkness. Harris, Vol. II, Nos. 204-243. - A magnificent series of etchings. - In 40 plates, Tauromaquia condenses the "beginnings, development, and current state" of bullfighting in Spain into a condensed visual narrative, in which Goya dramatically intensifies the struggle between man and bull in ever-changing configurations. In the scenes-mostly composed asymmetrically and darkened with aquatint-the bodies of the bullfighter and the bull come to the fore, while the arena and the audience are only vaguely suggested, so that the bullfight can be read as a timeless confrontation between the forces of nature and human virtuosity, but also as an allegory of violence, the experience of war, and Spanish identity. The etchings of the Tauromaquia possess a distinctly painterly print quality because Goya consistently combines line etching with aquatint, thereby creating a broad spectrum of tonal values ranging from almost blinding light to deep, grainy black. The edition is based on the sixth print series from the original copper plates and includes, in addition to the well-known 33 scenes of the bullfight, those seven additional plates that were discarded in the early 19th century or published only later.
