Alphabet pour Adultes. 1970. Mit einer originalen Rayographie, serigraphiert in Farbe, auf Velinkarton, auf mit Holzfurnier bezogener Platte montiert. Mit der zugehörigen Suite von 36 Lithographien, auf Arches-Velin (m.Wz.), auf 22 gefalteten Doppelblatt. Die Rayographie 38 x 28 cm. Signiert und nummeriert. Zusätzlich im Impressum signiert. In Orig.-Umschlag, in Orig.-Leinenkassette. - Die Rayogaphie stellenweise mit blassen Flecken, vereinzelte leichte Oberflächenbereibung im Rand, Papier in Rändern leicht gewellt, Holzfurnier mit wenigen leichten Wölbungen in zwei Rändern, verso blasse Stockflecken. Die Suite ganz vereinzelt mit winzigem Braunfleck, Leinenkasette außen mit leichten Bereibungsspuren, in Ecken punktuelle Bereibung. Insgesamt gut bis sehr gut. Ausgezeichneter Druck der formatfüllenden Darstellung.

Éditions Pierre Belfond, Paris 1970, Druck bei Fequet et Baudier, ebd. - Das "blaue Baguette" von Man Ray ist sein berühmtes surrealistisches Kunstwerk aus dem Jahr 1958, das den französischen Titel Pain peint (bemaltes Brot) trägt. Anknüpfend an sein englischsprachiges "Alphabet for Adults" entwirft Man Ray 1970 eine französische Fassung seines ABC-Kunstbuchs für Erwachsene. Statt auf die bisherigen Darstellungen und Wörter zurückzugreifen, schafft er neue literarische Illustrationen. Während einige Buchstaben wörtlich-bildliche Darstellung ihrer selbst abgeben, sind viele abstrakt-surrealistischer Natur komplexerer Auslegung. Man Ray löst den regulären Charakter des Genres des Alphabetbuchs für Kinder somit auf und stellt es dem gereiften Erwachsenenverständnis gegenüber. Als Gesamtes betrachtet, unterliegen die von ihm skizzierten Buchstaben dem dadaistisch zufälligen, scheinbar irrationalen Stil, bergen zugleich aber Themen in sich wie Begehren, Liebe und menschliche Beziehungen.

With the accompanying suite of 36 lithographs, on Arches wove paper (with watermark), on 22 folded double sheets. The rayograph signed and numbered. Additionally signed in the imprint. In original dust jacket, in original linen case. - Superb impression of the full-sized depiction. - One of 150 copies of the first edition. - Published by Éditions Pierre Belfond, Paris 1970, printed by Fequet et Baudier, ibid. - Man Ray's "Blue Baguette" is his famous surrealist artwork from 1958, which bears the French title Pain peint (Painted Bread). Following his English-language "Alphabet for Adults", Man Ray designs in 1970 a French version of his ABC art book for adults. Instead of referring to the previous representations and words, he sets up new literary illustrations. While some letters give literal pictorial representations of themselves, many are abstract-surrealistic of a more complex interpretation. Man Ray thus dissolves the regular character of the children's alphabet book genre and juxtaposes it with the mature adult understanding. Taken as a whole, the sketched letters are subject to the Dadaist random, seemingly irrational style, harbouring at the same time themes such as desire, love and human relationships.
