Lot 144 Arnulf Rainer. Perego. 2025. …

Perego. 2025. Kaltnadelradierung in Rot auf Velin. 39,6 x 30,4 cm (66 x 53 cm). Signiert und nummeriert. - Insgesamt sehr gut.

Austrian Post War – Drypoint etching in red on wove paper. Signed and numbered. - Exceptionally splendid, colour-intensive and rich impression with margins, with the scoop margin on the left. - One of 25 copies. Rainer's etching works with the nuances of a single printing ink, which, through varying line density, creates a tonal range extending from pale salmon pink and translucent rosé at the fraying edges to vibrant vermilion and, finally, a deep, rich crimson at the densified center. The circular composition follows his programmatic principle of covering and erasing: what appears in the center as a crimson mass is not painting, but accumulated drawing-the line itself becomes color, while the white of the handmade paper brightens the vermilion of the periphery into that warm, almost glowing light. Rainer deliberately chose red as the color of blood and vitality, and the visible spectrum here-from ivory through salmon pink and vermilion to crimson-is not merely a richness of color but a dramatic principle-a curve of intensity that inevitably draws the eye to the center. What appears in the center as a massive blaze of vermilion is not painting, but accumulated drawing-the line itself becomes color, placing the work within the continuity of his overpaintings and Cross series, in which geometric form and gestural excess enter into a productive tension.
