Rainer setzt hier das programmatische Prinzip seiner druckgrafischen Praxis in Blau um: Eine einzige Druckfarbe wird durch die variierende Dichte akkumulierter Strichlagen in eine vollständige Tonwertskala überführt - von zarten Eisblau-Spuren an den Rändern, wo einzelne Linien transparent auf dem elfenbeinfarbenen Büttenpapier auslaufen, über ein leuchtendes Kobaltblau in den mittleren Übergangszonen bis zu einem satten Ultramarinblau, das schließlich im Zentrum zu einem abgründigen Preußischblau verdichtet, das an die Grenze der Schwärze stößt. Dieses Verfahren - der Strich als Farbträger, Linie als koloristische Masse - ist nicht bloß technische Raffinesse, sondern werkimmanente Aussage: Rainer überführt den zeichnerischen Gestus in malerische Dichte, ohne je zur Malerei zu werden, und vollzieht damit in der Druckgrafik dieselbe Grenzüberschreitung, die seine Übermalungen im Bereich der Malerei kennzeichnet. Die hochrechteckige, in sich geschlossene Form verstärkt die Wirkung des Zentrums als schwarzen Sog: Das Mitternachtsblau des Kerns zieht das Auge unausweichlich nach innen und erzeugt jene kontemplativen Qualität, die Rainer selbst mit dem Ideal des "vollkommen dunklen Bildes, erfüllt von überwältigender Stille" beschrieb. Der Strich selbst wird zur Farbe, die Farbe zur Tiefe - und die Tiefe zum inhaltlichen Kern eines Werkes, das zwischen zeichnerischem Exzess und meditativer Versenkung oszilliert.

An exceptionally magnificent, richly colored, and textured print with margins, including the left margin. One of 25 copies. Here, Rainer translates the guiding principle of his printmaking practice into blue: a single ink is transformed into a full tonal range through the varying density of accumulated layers of lines-from delicate traces of ice blue at the edges, where individual lines fade transparently into the ivory-colored handmade paper, through a luminous cobalt blue in the central transition zones to a rich ultramarine blue, which finally condenses in the center into an abyssal Prussian blue that borders on black. This process-the stroke as a carrier of color, the line as a coloristic mass-is not merely technical sophistication, but a statement inherent to the work: Rainer transforms the gestural quality of drawing into painterly density without ever becoming painting, thereby achieving in printmaking the same transgression of boundaries that characterizes his overpaintings in the realm of painting. The tall, rectangular, self-contained form reinforces the effect of the center as a black vortex: the midnight blue of the core inevitably draws the eye inward and creates that contemplative quality which Rainer himself described as the ideal of the "perfectly dark image, filled with overwhelming silence." The line itself becomes color, the color becomes depth-and the depth becomes the substantive core of a work that oscillates between graphic excess and meditative absorption.
