Online - Moderne und zeitgenössische Kunst – Der deutsche Grafiker, Maler und Bildhauer Thilo Maatsch erlangte in den 1920er-Jahren vor allem mit seinen geometrisch-abstrakten Farbflächenkompositionen Bekanntheit. Während der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus wurden seine Arbeiten als "entartet" gelistet, woraufhin Maatsch seine künstlerische Tätigkeit weitgehend einstellte und sich ausschließlich seinem Beruf als Lehrer widmete. Nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs suchte Maatsch nach neuen, freieren Ausdrucksformen und wandte sich zunehmend einer biomorphen Abstraktion zu, in der konstruktive Elemente mit floralen und figuralen Motiven verschmelzen. In dieser Phase entstanden für den Künstler untypische Arbeiten auf Papier, Holzschnitte sowie kleinformatige Skulpturen, die sich deutlich von seinem restlichen OEuvre unterscheiden. Die weich gerundeten organischen Formen und pflanzlich anmutenden Elemente, die auch das vorliegende Werk prägen, stehen in engem Zusammenhang mit der organischen Kunst der 1950er- und 1960er-Jahre, wie sie beispielsweise von Barbara Hepworth vertreten wurde.

Finely executed relief work. - The German graphic artist, painter and sculptor Thilo Maatsch gained prominence in the 1920s, particularly for his geometric-abstract compositions of coloured planes. During the Nazi era, his works were listed as 'degenerate', whereupon Maatsch largely ceased his artistic activities and devoted himself exclusively to his profession as a teacher. After the end of the Second World War, Maatsch sought new, freer forms of expression and increasingly turned to biomorphic abstraction, in which constructive elements merge with floral and figural motifs. During this phase, the artist produced works on paper, woodcuts and small-scale sculptures that were atypical for him and differ significantly from the rest of his oeuvre. The softly rounded organic forms and plant-like elements that also characterise this work are closely linked to the organic art of the 1950s and 1960s, as exemplified by Barbara Hepworth, for instance.
