Maupertuis war einer der bedeutendsten Wissenschaftler und originellsten Denker des 18. Jahrhunderts. Er widerlegte die damaligen Präformationslehren und entwickelte aus seinen Studien zur Vererbung genetischer Merkmale verschiedene Ideen, die die genetische Vererbungstheorie vorwegnahmen. Er wandte das Konzept der Wahrscheinlichkeit auf genetische Probleme an und führte die experimentelle Züchtung als Mittel zur Untersuchung der Vererbung genetischer Merkmale bei Tieren ein.
