Mathematik
Naturwissenschaften – Erste Ausgabe von Eulers grundlegendem Werk der analytischen Mechanik. - Roberts and Trent, Bibliotheca Mechanica, S. 103f. - Honeyman Coll., 1058. - Kat. Kent State Univ., 53. - DSB IV, 479 f.
Natural Sciences – Mathematics. - First edition of Euler's fundamental work on analytical mechanics, profusely illustrated with 1 engraved allegorical head-piece, 32 copper engraved plates, as well as 2 further wood-cut head-pieces and vignettes with floral ornamentation. Neatly bound in contemporary vellum with printed title on paper spine labels. - For references see above. - In 1736, Swiss mathematician Leonard Euler (1707-83), who worked at the court of Catherine the Great in Petrograd, published his 'Mechanica', in which he applied the methods of infinitesimal calculus to Newtonian mechanics, thus laying the foundation for modern analytical mechanics (Kent, 53). - Vol. 2, fol. )(2 and plate XVIII with older additions in the head and outer margins respectively, some corners with minor faults. Slightly time-stained margins, vol. 1, lv. V2-4 with ink spotting, slight foxing in places, the paste-down and first fly-leafs with slightly visible stains of bookbinder's glueing. Wrong pagination (vol. 1: 217 instead of 225 and 351 instead of 151, pp. 225-232 incorrectly repeated. Vol. 2: 134 instead of 135, 160 instead of 161). All in all, a well-preserved, wide-margined set of this scarce milestone of mathematics and mechanics alike.
