Der Autor beschreibt Herkunft, Gewinnung, äußere Merkmale, Klassifikation und symbolische Bedeutungen der Mineralien und ordnet ihnen medizinische und pharmakologische Wirkungen zu, etwa in Form von Pulver, Tinkturen oder Amuletten. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt auf der "dignitas" von Steinen und Edelsteinen: ihren angeblichen Einflüssen auf Körper, Geist und Charakter, ihrer Verwendung in Medizin, Frömmigkeit und höfischer Repräsentation. Zugleich widmet Caesius das "terrarum pretium" (den Wert der Erden), die Herstellung von Farben und Pigmenten sowie die Kräfte "concreter Säfte" (z.B. Bitumen, Harze, Mineralwässer) eigenen Abschnitten und verbindet so naturkundliche Beobachtung mit praktischen Anwendungen in Kunst, Technik und Heilkunde. Als reich gegliedertes, gelehrtes Handbuch der Mineral- und Gesteinskunde im 17.
