Botanik

Naturwissenschaften – Zweite Ausgabe. - Cleveland Collections 176. - Nissen BBI 1575. - Oak Spring Flora 15. - Pritzel 10855.

Natural Sciences – With engraved copper title, etched frontispiece, 69 engraved copper plates. Paris: Pierre Firens, 1627. 71 leaves. Folio. Contemporary half-parchment with parchment corners. Second edition. - Cleveland Collections 176. - Nissen BBI 1575. - Oak Spring Flora 15. - Pritzel 10855. - Magnificent edition of Rabel's Theatrum Florae, by the French painter and engraver (1578-1637), published in 1627 by Pierre Firens in Paris as the second edition of the work, first issued in 1622. It is a floral copper engraving work with an engraved title page and 69 large-format (approx. 37,5 cm x 26 cm) copper engravings depicting splendid flowers from around the world-including tulips, lilies, daffodils, hyacinths, crocuses, irises, anemones, and carnations. The illustrations are distinguished by exceptional artistic quality and near-scientific realism, inspired by earlier florilegia such as those by Pierre Vallet and de Bry, yet featuring original, richly detailed, and naturalistic depictions from nature. - As the second engraved florilegium of France after Vallet's Jardin du Roy (1608), it is regarded as a significant botanical art work of the 17th century, blending art and early botany while making exotic flowers accessible to European botanists. It influenced later works and is highly prized in collections such as Oak Spring Flora (Pritzel 10855). - First and last plate neatly backed, a few leaves with small edge losses only at the lower right corner, some leaves with minor water spots solely at the lower right outer corner. - Overall a good copy. Partly magnificent, finely articulated and high-contrast impressions with beautiful plate tone. In contrast to unused plates from earlier pulls, the 1627 plates offer a balanced plate tone that preserves the artistic refinement without excessive wear as seen in the 1633 edition.
