Architecture – Attractively illustrated German edition of the first comprehensive report on the excavations at Herculaneum. - For references see above. - The work on which this edition is based, 'Le Antichità di Ercolano esposte', was published between 1755 and 1792 in 9 volumes as a prestigious project of the King of the Two Sicilies, Charles III, in Naples. The outstanding archaeological value of the finds at Herculaneum lies in their comparatively good state of preservation, as the ancient city was virtually sealed by a pyroclastic flow of intense heat in a short period of time during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. The Augsburg engraver and publisher Georg Christoph Kilian (1701-89) wanted to do justice to the international interest in the excavation project. Since the original had only been published in a small edition, Kilian produced simplified outline etchings of the spectacular, mostly elaborately etched original engravings and enlisted the renowned art historian Christoph Gottlieb Murr (1733-1811) to describe them. Kilian himself was responsible for parts 1-6. Parts 7, 8.1 and 8.2, as well as a supplementary volume (VD18 90229312, missing from this set) followed posthumously between 1794 and 1799 as an extension of present second edition of parts 1-6 and were published by Kilian's grandson Christoph Friedrich Bürglen, who had inherited the copyright (see publisher's note in pt. 7, p. 3). Bürglen gained Johann Baltasar Probst and Friedrich Leitzelt as contributing engravers, with the latter also acting as publisher. - Collation: 10 (title, dedication, privilege, preface), 16 pp. 4 (title, preface), VI, 20 pp. 2 (title), 20 pp. 2 (title), 28 pp., XVI (including title and preface), 31 (1, errata for parts I-V) p. 4 (title, preface), 36 p. 4 (title, preface), IV (preface) p., 63 (1) p., 2 (title), XIV, 24 p., 2 (title), 18 p. - Provenance: 1. Library of the Benedictine monastery of Ochsenhausen (Germany), with a Latin note on first fly-leaf verso of pt. 1 by the librarian mentioning the abbot of the monastery, Romuald Weltin (1723-1805), dated 1791, and library stamps on the title pages of parts 1, 4 and 7. The library was dissolved in 1825 by its owner, the Austrian Chancellor Klemens von Metternich. 2. Joseph Schönmann (1799-1879), Austrian painter, with his pen and ink signature on the title pages of parts 1, 4 and 7. Schönmann lived in Italy from 1832 to 1848 and visited Naples (and presumably also Ercolano) in 1834, among other places. On 2nd fly-leaf recto of pt. 1, Schönmann documented his purchase of this set: '20 Sendi. Rome. 1836. Schönmann.' 3. A third, unidentifiable owner also noted his purchase, below Schönmann's entry: "30 flor. Gulden Vienne 1873 ..." 4. Georg Daumer. 5. Heinrich Lafite, with his note below the others: 'cca. 1890 transferred from Georg Daumer to the ownership of Heinrich Lafite'. - Title vignette from Part 6 and 5 engravings on 3 plates in Part 6 and 2 plates in Part 7 are missing. Some leaves (especially title leaves) with small thumb tabs. - Somewhat browned in places, the plates show some crease marks in places. - Overall, a well-preserved set of this monumental copperplate engraving, rare in this (almost) complete form.
