Jahrhundert zum "Hausbuch der Kunstinteressierten" (KLL) und gilt heute als enzyklopädisches Handbuch der Ästhetitk der Aufklärung. - Das Faltkupfer zeigt eine Landschaftsdarstellung mit Linierung für Perspektive und Proportion. - Es fehlen die leeren fliegenden Vorsatzblätter. - Gebräunt, in den Rändern und im Schnitt stellenweise finger-, schmutz- und stockfleckig, Buchblock von Bd. 2 gebrochen, insgesamt solides Exemplar des kunsthistorisch bedeutenden Werks.

Science of Art – Second edition of Sulzer's opus magnum, an encyclopaedia of art appreciation in the Age of Enlightenment. Illustrated with 1 engraved allegorical frontispiece, 1 folding copper engraved plate and several text illustrations as well as musical scores, some of which folding. Contemporary half-leather with gilt spine title and numbering on leather labels, covers covered with stone marble paper and red edges throughout (spines with faults , more heavily scuffed and bumped). - For references see above. - The astonishingly erudite art theory of the Swiss theologian and philosopher Johann Georg Sulzer (1720-99), arranged alphabetically by term, became the 'house book of art lovers' (KLL) in the late 18th century and is now considered an encyclopaedic handbook of Enlightenment aesthetics. - The folded copperplate engraving shows a landscape with lines indicating perspective and proportions. - Missing the front and rear fly-leafs in both volumes. - Browned, stained and soiled in places on the margins and edges, book block of vol. 2 broken, overall a solid copy of this art-historically significant work.
