Das prachtvolle und wichtige kunstgewerbliche Werk katalogisiert antike Gläser systematisch, ergänzt durch Vignetten im Text und nummerierte Exemplare (z. B. Nr. 77 von 150), mit Fokus auf Formen, Techniken und Provenienzen römischer und griechischer Objekte. Froehner, ein Experte für Antiken, liefert detaillierte Beschreibungen, die die Sammlung als eine der bedeutendsten des 19. Jahrhunderts hervorheben. - Wilhelm Fröhner, geboren 1834 in Karlsruhe als Christian Eduard Ludwig Wilhelm Fröhner, war ein deutscher Klassischer Archäologe, der nach seinem Studium in Bonn, Freiburg und Göttingen ab 1859 in Frankreich blieb und dort als Konservator in der Abteilung für griechisch-römische Altertümer des Louvre wirkte. Er unterstützte Kaiser Napoleon III. als Vorleser, wurde 1866 französischer Staatsbürger und verfasste nach seiner Entlassung 1871 durch den Deutsch-Französischen Krieg zahlreiche Kataloge privater wichtiger Antikensammlungen.Papierbedingt wie in allen Exemplaren teils etwas gebräunt bzw. fleckig. Die Tafeln teils sehr prächtig und farbstark.

Science of Art – With frontispiece and 34 (partly hand-colored) lithographed plates. Rare first edition, No copies of this edition are currently available to us in international trade. This splendid and important work on artistic crafts systematically catalogs ancient glassware, supplemented by vignettes in the text and numbered copies (e.g., No. 77 of 150), focusing on forms, techniques, and provenances of Roman and Greek objects. Froehner, an expert on antiquities, provides detailed descriptions that highlight the collection as one of the most significant of the 19th century. - Wilhelm Fröhner, born in 1834 in Karlsruhe as Christian Eduard Ludwig Wilhelm Fröhner, was a German classical archaeologist who, after studying in Bonn, Freiburg, and Göttingen, remained in France from 1859 onward and served as curator in the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities at the Louvre. He supported Emperor Napoleon III as a lecturer, became a French citizen in 1866, and after his dismissal in 1871 due to the Franco-Prussian War, authored numerous catalogs of important private antiquities collections. Paper-related, as in all copies, partially somewhat browned or spotted. The plates are partly very splendid and vividly colored.
