Kunstwissenschaften – Seltenes vollständiges Exemplar der zweiten Ausgabe des monumentalen Tafelwerks mit Emblemcharakter. - Berliner Ornamentstichkat. I, 24. (Bd I., Erste Ausg. 1786) u. 156 (Bd. II). - Landwehr, Romanic Emblem Books, 437 und 438 (zählt nur die 249 Bildtaf.) - Die üppigen emblematischen Kompositionen von Jean Charles Delafosse (1734-89) verbinden das allegorische Temperament des Barock mit einer großer ornamentalen Formierung, die für die für den Neoklassizismus charakteristisch ist. - Die Erstausgabe des monumentalen Werks war drei Jahre zuvor mit nur 110 Tafeln ausgestattet erschienen. Vorliegende zweite Ausgabe wurde um 141 Tafeln erweitert. - Die Tafeln in Bd. I entworfen und gestochen von Delafosse selbst, jene des II. Bandes nach Entwürfen von Delafosse von Touvenin, Littret, Baquoy, Berthault, Joly, Foin, Le Canu, Tardieu u.a. - Abgebildet sind u.a. Brunnen, Rahmen, Medaillons, Grabmäler, Denkmäler, Kamine, Konsolen, Vasen, Gefäße, Türen, Trophäen, Kartuschen, Sockel, Wandleuchter, Kelche, Betpulte, Monstranzen, Geräte, Kanzeln, Friese, Rankenwerk, Orgeln, Öfen, Decken und Kapitelle. - Provenienz: Ferdinand Wiedey (1854-1922), Opernregisseur und - sänger, mit dessen gedruckten Ex Libris (beiliegend). - Bd. 1, Taf. 88 mit hinterlegtem großem Riss. Bd. 1, Taf. 9 mit kleinem Ausriss rechts unten. Bd. II, Taf. (1-2) mit größerem Schmutzfleck. Beide Bände vereinzelt in den weißen Rändern gering braun-, schmutz- und fingerfleckig, sowie mit Wasserflecken und kleinen Stockfleckchen. - Insgesamt gut erhaltenes, breitrandiges Exemplar des bemerkenswerten Tafelwerks, die Blätter teils noch mit Schöpfrand im Fußsteg. Komplett sehr selten, für uns auf Auktionen der letzten 20 Jahre nur in einem weiteren Exemplar nachweisbar.

Science of Art – Rare complete copy of the second edition of this monumental work about interiors with emblematic character, consisting of 270 copper engraved folio leaves, picture and text plates alike. Bound in contemporary half-leather with gilt titles, boards with blue decorative paper (vol. 1 with later sewing and partly loose joints, spines with faults and joints in parts cracked, worn and occasionally soiled). - For references see above. - The lavish emblematic compositions by Jean Charles Delafosse (1734-89) combine the allegorical temperament of the Baroque with a grand ornamental formation characteristic of Neoclassicism. - The first edition of this monumental work was published three years earlier with only 110 plates. This second edition has been expanded by 141 plates. - The plates in vol. I were designed and engraved by Delafosse (or La Fosse) himself, while those in vol. II were based on designs by him, Touvenin, Littret, Baquoy, Berthault, Joly, Foin, Le Canu, Tardieu and others. - Depicted are fountains, frames, medallions, tombs, monuments, fireplaces, consoles, vases, vessels, doors, trophies, cartouches, pedestals, wall sconces, chalices, prayer desks, monstrances, implements, pulpits, friezes, tendrils, organs, stoves, ceilings and capitals, among others. - Provenance: Ferdinand Wiedey (1854-1922), opera director and singer, with his printed book-plate enclosed. - Vol. 1, plate 88 with large backed tear. Vol. 1, plate 9 with small tear at bottom right. Vol. II, plates (1-2) with larger stain. Both volumes with occasional minor browning, dirt and finger stains at margins, as well as water stains and small foxing spots. - Overall, a well-preserved, wide-margined copy of this remarkable illustrated work, some of the pages still with deckle edges at the bottom. Very rare as a complete set, we have only found one other copy at auction in the last 20 years.
