Japan
Kunstwissenschaften – Selten. Insgesamt sehr gut erhalten.
Science of Art – Text and Plate Volume. With 37 plates with heliogravure. Canvas binding with black-stamped title (slightly rubbed and stained, spine sun-faded). - Rare. - While until 1900 Japanese sowrd guards were often arranged by motif or technical group, this work presents a chronological arrangement of the guards. The first chronological study of sword guards was published in 1902 by Justus Brinckmann, which inspired the author, Gustav Jacoby, to reexamine the collection discussed here. In doing so, he largely attempted to avoid relying on European literature and drew primarily on Japanese writings regarding the schools and motifs of Japanese sword guards. - Edges slightly browned. Overall in very good condition.
