Science of Art – With 56 coloured aquatint plates. Leporello bound loosely in a linen cover with 4 fastening ribbons (of 6, 3 of which have been replaced in the period style), front cover with gold-stamped title, coat of arms and blind-stamped publisher's mark, 15 x 38 cm. In a wooden casket lined with silk moiré and velvet in the style of a coffin (signed Sangorski & Sutcliffe), with gold-embossed title on the lid and the date 1853, and gold-embossed crowned monogram 'W' as corner fleurons. Approx. 46 x 24 x 8 cm. - This magnificent panorama, composed of 56 segments and measuring approximately 20 metres when unfolded, depicts the regiments, military bands, government officials, and distinguished social and political guests who accompanied the funeral procession, including the new Duke. 'The Funeral Procession of Arthur Duke of Wellington' is one of the most spectacular leporello panoramas of the 19th century and, at the same time, the last publication by the renowned London publisher Ackermann & Co. before its dissolution in 1855. The panorama was engraved by Henry Gordon Samuel Alken (1810-1894) and provided with text by George Augustus Sala (1828-1895). Ackermann & Co. commissioned Sala immediately after Wellington's death, and Sala later described it as the most significant work he had produced for the publisher up to that point. The procession begins with advance guard units of the British Army and then, in uninterrupted succession, depicts representatives of all regiments of the British Army, detachments from the Bengal, Madras and Bombay armies of the East India Company, as well as Chelsea Pensioners who joined the procession. The highlight is the depiction of the monumental hearse - 5.15 m high, 8.2 m long, drawn by 12 black horses from Booth's gin distillery - which had been designed by Gottfried Semper. - Somewhat mottled with brown spots in places, but overall still a fine copy.
