Mit 2 großen, zusätzlich handkolorierten Aquatinten, wovon eine als Titelvignette und die andere als Incipit, sowie 1 Faltkupfer mit handkoloriertem Grundriss des Garten. Leipzig, S.(iegfried) L.(eberecht) Crusius für den Autor, 1793. 1 Bl. (Tit.), 14 (2, Legende d. Plans) S. Folio (37,5 × 24,1 cm). OBr. mit schwarzem Umschlagtit., der Rücken mit Steinmarmorpapier verstärkt, Vorderumschl. mit hs. Vermerk ("Hoffmann") auf Papierschild (Beschabt, lichtrandig, gering finger-, schmutz- und tintenfleckig).

A. Besemann). - Nicht bei Nissen. Im Handel von großer Seltenheit, für uns in den letzten 20 Jahren nur in zwei weiteren Exemplaren auf Auktionen nachweisbar. Die überhaupt erste separat erschiene Darstellung über den alten Göttinger Botanischen Garten, verfasst vom jungen neuen Direktor des Gartens, Georg Franz Hoffmann (1761-1826), dem Untertitel ("Orationem...") nach zu urteilen, auch ein Loblied auf die spirituelle Berufung des Gartengestalters. In seinen Begegnungen und Gesprächen erinnert sich Goethe liebevoll: "Ich besuchte sehr oft Professor Hoffmann dank dem ich mich näher mit Kryptogamen vertraut machte, die für mich immer ein undurchdringliches Gebiet gewesen waren." Hoffmann wurde später Direktor des Botanischen Gartens in Moskau, und die Gattung Hoffmannia ist nach ihm benannt. - Die großen Vignetten entworfen, gezeichnet und kunstvoll als Aquatinta ausgearbeitet vom für die Universität Göttingen tätigen Zeichenmeister und Kupferstecher Christian Andreas Besemann (1760-1818), zusätzlich genauso kräftig und farbfrisch wie fein koloriert, ebenso der von E. Reepenhausen gestochene Grundriss des Gartens. - Provenienz: Bibliothek Schloss Johannishus, Schweden, mit einem auf den Vorderspiegel montierten, auf Bütten radierten illustrativen Ex Libris (monogr. "H. S. 52"), inkorporierend das Wappen des schwedischen Adelsgeschlechts Wachtmeister bzw. mit einem weiteren Monogramm-Stempel ("AG")auf dem Titelblatt. - In den Rändern minimal fingerfleckig, sonst ausgezeichnet erhaltenes, breitrandiges Exemplar dieses formschönen Drucks mit exzellenten Aquatinten und Plan, für Sammler von Gartenliteratur ein wahres Kleinod.

A. Besemann). - Not listed in Nissen. Extremely rare on the market, only two other copies have been found by us at auction in the last 20 years. The very first separately published account of the old Göttingen Botanical Garden, written by the garden's young new director, Georg Franz Hoffmann (1761-1826), and judging by the subtitle ('Orationem...'), also a paean to the spiritual calling of the garden designer. Goethe fondly recalls his encounters and conversations: 'I visited Professor Hoffmann very often thanks to whom I became more familiar with cryptogams, which had always been an impenetrable field for me.' Hoffmann later became director of the Botanical Garden in Moscow, and the genus Hoffmannia is named after him. - The large vignettes were designed, drawn and artfully executed as aquatints by Christian Andreas Besemann (1760-1818), a master draughtsman and engraver working for the University of Göttingen, and in addition are handcoloured with the same vigour and freshness of colour as the ground plan of the garden engraved by E. Reepenhausen. - Provenance: Library of Johannishus Castle, Sweden, with an illustrative ex libris mounted on the front cover, etched on mould paper (monogrammed 'H. S. 52'), incorporating the coat of arms of the Swedish noble family Wachtmeister and with a monogram stamp "AG" on the title page. - Minimal finger stains in the margins, otherwise an excellently preserved, wide-margined copy of this beautiful print with excellent aquatints and plan, a real gem for collectors of garden literature.
