Science of Art – First edition of the very first report on archaeological finds in Troy, with a large title vignette and some text illustrations in wood engraving. - Borst 3245. - PMM 362: "In 1870 he began his work in Hisarlik (northwest Anatolia, note), in 1873 he uncovered enormous fortifications destroyed by fire in the lowest layer and discovered a hoard of gold jewelry. What Schliemann actually discovered is known today as a pre-Achaean city that existed long before the Homeric city, but he had proven his original thesis: Here was the true location of Troy." Schliemann's localization of Homeric Troy is still considered "the most significant of all archaeological finds." - An atlas volume with 218 photographic plates was published at the same time. - Some foxing, otherwise well preserved copy of this pioneering work.
